The Device Atlas company has detected devices, using the Internet, with numerous screen sizes, even sizes over 45 inches. Pixel widths have also been detected from as little as 40 to a whopping 3840.

With such a vast range is physical dimensions, pixel dimensions and even rotatable screens website developers have complex challenges to overcome in website design.

Responsive versus Adaptive Website Design

Responsive Designs comprise one layout which is fluid and adapts to the size of the screen no matter what the target device. They use a CSS media query to change styles based on the target device such as display type, width, height etc. These designs can be slower and more complex. Also, the layout on any specific devuce can be a little unpredictable. These designs are generally recommended for new websites.

Adaptive Designs use multiple static layouts based on screen size breakpoints (either in terms of physical screen size or pixel width). This design works by detecting the screen size and loading the appropriate layout for it. Six common pixel widths are 320, 480, 760, 960, 1200 and 1600. These designs can be more expensive but allow more control. The additional control can be used on conjunction with features to automatically create and cache smaller versions of images which minimises download size.
